Breakfast in Hesset

The place for a fresh local farmhouse breakfast on Saturday September 2nd will be the Heath Farm farm pop-up at Hesset village hall. We went to one last Saturday and had a tasty sausage bap (£3) and home-made sausage rolls (£2.50) cooked on the spot. You can have a full English breakfast with eggs laid that day, and a lamb and tzatziki-slaw bap for brunch too - from a small but tasty menu of locally produced meat which is also for sale on the day.

Hello Steve - from Clavering Pigs...

Steve sells his own farm-reared pork at local farmers markets and he was at the new Elmswell market last Sunday. He doesn't have a website and only uses the internet to check the tide tables when he wants to go fishing, so Google Clavering Pigs if you want to find out where to find him.

Rickinghall Farmers Market

rickinghall market

It looked empty from the car park although we had a nice apple tasting from Mr Greenwoods (Norfolk, but we like Norfolk too) on the way in. Inside it was busy, we bought honey, coffee, black pudding, cheese and a lot of curry!

Inside Outside Aldercarr

Spent the morning (and at least £50) chatting to the producers and telling them that Gino is coming to town in case they want to enter the competition. We tasted beetroot and chilli relish from The Seasonal Garden www.theseasonalgarden.co.uk, a nice pork pie and liver and bacon dog biscuits (the dog loved them!) from Samphire's www.samphireshop.co.uk. and took home a chicken, bacon and mushroom pie made in Buxhall, bread from flour ground at Pakenham Mill, fudge and a slice of cake. In the cafe we ate deep fried goats cheese with beetroot and apple salad and honey dressing. A nice way to spend a day in the pouring rain with no sign of warmer weather yet.

PS If you're looking for squirrel meat, someone here sells that too.

Wyken Sunday Lunch

This is an expensive farm shop, but I can't fault the food in their cafe. Lunch goes on until 4.00pm, perfect for those of us who only decide we want to go for a walk at 1pm. We look at the llamas for a few minutes to justify eating, then a table becomes available and I can only put it on the blog if I have tasted the food.  We had Stowlangtoft lamb brochette (on a stick) with a lovely aubergine side, yoghurt sauce and rocket salad. A salmon fish cake with (not very sweet but very hot) sweet chili sauce, maybe they bought the wrong one... a side order of very hot and crisp french fries and a selection of three British cheeses - Keens Cheddar, Oxford Blue and Gold Medal something, that I made them swear to remember the name but they have already forgotten. All three were as delicious a cheese as you are ever going to find anywhere and served at the perfect temperature. Then puddings - white chocolate bread and butter pudding which sounds revolting but was actually much nicer than it sounds, rhubarb mousse because I haven't had any rhubarb yet, fab pink and very sweet, but on a suspect too-white (shop?) meringue basket, and carrot cake which I don't like in any shape or form but still managed to taste.

Oh the joy of eating late when you want to ! And it was lovely food; no obese oversize portions and a menu that you are never going to see in your average pub Sunday lunch.  It was £15.00 each including soft drinks. Not bad for everything sourced within five miles of the kitchen - or so they say...?!

Whoopie Pies and Macaroons…

... have arrived in Suffolk. The Whoopie Pies are on the cover of the Sainsbury's magazine and for sale in M&S. The only ones I've eaten so far were my sister's who had made them weeks ago - being a keen food trend spotter.  But my real new favourites are Macaroons - those French ones in all colours  - on sale at Wyken Farmers Market -  which means they are expensive, but probably worth it? Have a look at www.delicedeparis.co.uk

The day has finally come when my first free sample as a result of writing about food has arrived - HOORAY ! Bring on the presents/bribes/samples. So off to Wyken to get my macaroons and take a few pictures of the other stall holders while I'm there. And we liked the salted caramel ones best Min!
